Effective September 13, 2026 · Applies to Amma on iOS and Android, for families using either the Amma or Appa persona.
Talking to Amma is the app's core feature, and it works by sending your voice and words to two outside companies that specialize in AI. Here's exactly what goes where:
| Data | Sent to | Why | Kept afterward? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your voice recording | ElevenLabs | Transcribed into text ("speech-to-text"), using your family's language setting to transcribe accurately | No — the recording is discarded once we get the text back |
| The text of what you said | Anthropic | Given to Claude, the AI model that writes Amma's reply, along with recent conversation history for context | Our server — saved as conversation history, so Amma remembers earlier messages |
| Amma's written reply | ElevenLabs | Converted into spoken audio ("text-to-speech") so Amma can talk back | No — the audio is streamed to your device and not stored by us |
Anthropic's and ElevenLabs' own privacy practices govern how they handle what we send them. You can read Anthropic's privacy policy and ElevenLabs' privacy policy for their own details.
When you set up Amma, the parent's name, the child's name, an optional phone number for the child, and a language preference are stored on our server. This lets Amma greet the right people, call the right number when asked, and reply in the right language — it isn't shared with Anthropic or ElevenLabs beyond what's needed for the specific reply being generated (for example, the name used in a greeting).
If you choose to, you can record about 30 seconds of your voice so Amma can reply using a custom voice instead of a default one. This is entirely separate from the core Talk feature described above:
Amma can look up a phone number from your phone's Contacts app so you can say a name — like "call Geetha" — instead of a number. This lookup happens entirely on your device. Only the name you say is ever sent to Anthropic as part of your message; the phone numbers in your Contacts never leave your phone.
We don't use your data for advertising, and we don't track you across other companies' apps or websites.
Amma is designed to be used together, with a parent setting up the family and a child using the Talk feature to stay in touch. The same data practices described above apply regardless of the child's age. If you're a parent or guardian with questions about a child's data, or want it removed, contact us below — we'll act on that request directly.
If how Amma handles data changes — for example, adding a new third-party service — we'll update this page and the date at the top, and call out material changes in the app itself.
